20th birthday celebration, 2011

In April 2011 in partnership with the Department of Social Policy at the LSE, we held an event to celebrate the publication of two new books on voluntary action history and to mark twenty years since the formation of the Voluntary Action History Society (1991-2011).

An afternoon seminar included papers by Professor Bernard Harris (University of Southampton) and Associate Professor Melanie Oppenheimer (University of New England, Australia). You can read Melanie Oppenheimer’s paper here and the paper and powerpoint presentation given by Bernard Harris here.

An evening drinks reception featured the book launch and short talks by Emeritus Professor Nicholas Deakin and Dr Justin Davis Smith, Chief Executive of Volunteering England.

An accompanying exhibition ‘Sixty Years of Volunteering History’ curated by Dr Georgina Brewis (Institute of Education) and Anjelica Finnegan (University of Southampton) presented original materials from the LSE archive, including papers from the Beveridge Collection and the new Volunteering England Archive.

A short film Student Volunteering: A Short History was screened for the first time.
