Abstract
Mrs Nassau Senior was active in many fields of voluntary action included the pioneering of voluntary social work in poor housing areas, responsibility for social housing finance, workhouse infirmary visiting, support of girls’ industrial schools, co-founding the British Red Cross in wartime, championing the fostering and adoption of destitute orphans as an alternative to the workhouse, and the founding of the Metropolitan Association for Befriending Young Servants. This paper draws on her own unpublished letters and letters received from such prominent figures as Octavia Hill, Lord Shaftesbury and Florence Nightingale.
